SARANAC?LAKE?- The Women's College Scholarship Club is offering three $800 Continuing Education Scholarships to adults in the Saranac Lake Central School District (defined by its school bus routes).

These scholarships are for adults who wish to return to school after an absence of several years in order to change or enhance careers. Applicants must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. Part-time students may apply. Adults who have already begun a program are eligible to apply.

Applications, along with instructions for applying, are available at the financial aid office at North Country Community College, the financial aid office at Paul Smith's College and the Saranac Lake Free Library.

An applicant must submit the application form, a personal letter and letters of recommendation by Friday, May 14. Winners will be notified by May 21.

In Maryland, if you are female and plan to pursue an education in the field of education then you may be able to receive some of the grants-in-aid from the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society's Lambda Chapter. This free grant money will be awarded to a female senior or undergraduate college student from Accomack and Northampton counties.

The grant money ranges from $500 to $5000 and the four grants-in-aid are given in memory of long-time members Elizabeth Jones Newton and Elizabeth Payne Miles and the parents of Elizabeth Miles, Burylss Bruce Payne and Eva Wessels Payne.

The River Falls Area Foundation offers scholarships for moms and the non-traditional students, who live or work in the region served by the River Falls Area Hospital Foundation. The foundation's goal is to increase the number of health care providers in the River Falls and surrounding area.

Have a passion for the communication field? Be it journalism, advertising, marketing, or broadcasting, the New York Women in Communications Foundation awards scholarships to incoming students, college undergraduates, and graduate students.

In order to qualify for these scholarships for women, you must be majoring (or for high school seniors, declaring a major) in a communications-related field including, but not limited to, advertising, broadcasting, communications, English, film, journalism, marketing, new media, or public relations. The Ruth B. Sayre Scholarship. This scholarship is worth $500 and the deadline for applications is February 15th. To qualify, you must be a woman and a legal resident of the United States. Jill Park Bell Scholarship, which is worth $1,000 and is given by Robert and Janice Park in memory of their daughter, Jill. Scholarships for Teaching Students is being offered at Governors State University called the TQE-R scholarship (Teacher Quality Enhancement Recruitment Scholarship) in the amount of $500 to $3000 for qualified applicants or currently enrolled students in the secondary education programs in biology, chemistry, English, mathematics at GSU.

In order to receive Scholarships for Teaching Students, after completion of the program the scholarship recipients are required to teach in a high need school for a period of time equal to the length of the scholarship or reimburse the U.S. Department of Education for all scholarship monies received.

To qualify for this scholarship you must be admitted to a GSU Secondary Education Program, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher for all undergraduate coursework in the degree program, as on official transcripts. Osceola County is offering a Scholarship to 7th Graders, who qualify for the free lunch program. This scholarship is from the Take Stock in Children organization and in order to receive the scholarship, the 7th grader must sign a contract to maintain good attendance, good grades, good behavior, and stay away from alcohol, drugs, and violence. In addition, the student will meet with an adult mentor 30 minutes per week during school hours.

If, by the student's end of the senior year he/she has kept the promised made in the contract, then a 2+2 prepaid Florida scholarship will be awarded.

The Soroptimist International is offering Scholarships for Women who are the primary breadwinners of their family, have a financial need, and are currently enrolled or have been accepted to a vocational or undergraduate degree program.

The deadline for these Scholarships for Women is December 15, 2009, however, you must turn in your application to your local chapter by December 1, 2009, in order for the scholarship application to be received by the Soroptimist Headquarters in time. In Maine, a high-school drop out and mother of two has been awarded a $25,000 Doctors for Maine's Future scholarship for the study of medicine.

Tobin Carson, now age 32, has been working as a research technician at Lohmann Animal Health in Winslow. She is one of four people in Maine who qualified for the grant as a first-year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. This is a renewable scholarship, which means that she will be receiving $25,00 per year for the next four years.

This scholarship was established in July of this year to provide a tuition subsidy for eligible students who enter qualifying Maine-based medical school programs. The scholarships aim to address Maine's acute shortage of primary care physicians and the high cost of medical education.

In an address in May on national grants for biomedical research, the governor mentioned Tobin Carson by name.

"At age 15, she announced her dream of going to medical school," Baldacci said. "Unfortunately, she was discouraged from pursuing that dream, being told, 'People like you don't go to places like that.' Not long after that, Tobin quit high school, feeling that it wasn't doing her any good. But she never stopped learning and her desire to go to medical school never faded. After her children were born, she got her GED certificate and enrolled in the University of Maine at Farmington full time as a biology major, graduating at age 28.

One of the bills that is moving into the senate after being passed by the house is the bill concerning government student loans. This bill will in essence cut out the middle man in lending, i.e. the banks and private lenders. This is projected to free up an estimated $80 billion dollars over 10 years and half of that, or $40 billion, will be directed into the Pell Grant program.

This bill will originate all new federal student loans through the Direct Loan program starting in 2010, instead of through lenders subsidized by taxpayers in the federally-guaranteed student loan program. Unlike the lender-based program, the Direct Loan program is entirely insulated from market swings and can therefore guarantee students access to affordable college loans, at the same low interest rates, terms and conditions, no matter what happens in the economy.

Since the onset of him taking office, the president has put emphasis on education. He has raised the amount funded by the Pell grant, and there is currently a bill in the works to increase this grant even more.

The current maximum Pell Grant is $5,550, and in fiscal 2009 approximately $25 billion is slated for Pell Grants. And with this increase more students will qualify, especially the middle class families. This increase in education funding is contingent upon the Senate passing this bill, which would put an end to a federal program that subsidizes private lenders, who provide federally guaranteed student loans. The government would essentially be cutting out the middlemen and directly lending to students.

By doing this, an estimated $80 billion could be saved by the government over 10 years for education and half of that would go to Pell grants. The bill will help student aid programs finally serve the interests of students and alleviate difficulties in paying for college, said Melissa Salmanowitz, spokeswoman for the House Education and Labor Committee.

Unfortunately, though, the cost of college is rapidly increasing. But those who are seeking financial aid should do everything they can to find it, including checking out the accredited online schools to see what they have to offer.

She received $1,200 from the Marilyn C. Davis Memorial Scholarship. This afforded her to be able to pay a baby sitter 10 hours per week for three months this summer to watch her baby and during those rare moments away, she was able to travel to the campus and interact with colleagues in her office.

"As a grad student, your monthly stipend is barely enough to live on in this county," said Kristen Heady. "You add child care to that and it's next to impossible."

To qualify, undergraduates have to be at least 25 and graduate students, 29. The women can use the money for everything from tuition fees and conference admission, to child care and other every day expenses that might put college out of reach for some students.

There is also an emergency fund connected to the scholarship for women who are suddenly forced to choose between "staying in school or feeding their kids," Anderson said.

Moms are busy. We barely have enough time to get all the things done we have to do in a day. But, if for moms returning to college, we have to find some extra time to complete our coursework.

Back in the day there were no choices. If you wanted to get get a degree, you had to drive to the campus, try to find a parking place, drag your books to class and then sit there while the professor taught. That is just the way it was. NC Reach Program in North Carolina, has a program available to all orphans in the state that will pick up the tab for any remaining educational tuition after grants and/or scholarships.

This program was started in 2008 and many people do not know about it who could be taking advantage of it. Of course, you do not have to be a single mom for this grant/scholarship but if you are, you will still qualify.

The requirements to receive this money are:

Being a legal resident of North Carolina eligible for in-state tuition rates.

Were adopted from North Carolina DSS foster care after age 12 or aged out of NC foster care at age 18 (must have been in NC DSS foster care on 18th birthday).

Enrolled in one of the 74 North Carolina Public colleges, universities, or community colleges.

Have not yet reached age 26. Student remain eligible until their 26th birthday.

In searching for an informational video to help single mothers, mother, and single parents I came across this one for the single parent nursing program in NJ. What a great idea this is. This is what is called a hand up not a hand out.

After finding this single parent program, I dug a little deeper and found another college out there that are offering single parent scholarships.

These were the terms:

1. Scholarships to be used for tuition, travel and educational costs
2. Career advising
3. Community referrals
4. Workshops and information about life management and study skills

Eligible Students Must Be:

The times of having to actually go to campus for our classes are long gone. Now, thanks to technology, single moms online degrees are popping up at schools all across the country. We can "attend" classes in the comfort of our own home and not waste so much time driving to and from school...and trying to find a place to park.

This is a great luxury, however, it can also problematic if you are not a self-motivated and structured person. Just like going to classes in person, you are responsible for the classwork even though you do it online. You have to be motivated enough to get the work done and not put it off. Have a schedule for yourself as to when you will do the work and stick to it. Of course, if your child gets sick or you have to go to your child's school, you can change your schedule to fit your needs for that day. But don't get in a habit of this.

Don't think that taking care of your baby while you study at home is going to be easy because it is not. If your child is too young for school, try to have a family member or friend watch him/her while you do your course work. If you child is in school, then use that time to study.

However, if you are working all day when your kids are in school, then you may have to wait until after they go to bed or use the time before they get up. You can also do your homework when they do theirs. This may help them out in the long run, as if you are doing your studies at the same time they are, it is not quite as easy for them not to focus with you sitting there. The key is to just be consistent.

Remember, these few years are going to pass and pass quickly and will pave a way to a better life for you and your family in the future.

Usually I try to show support for single moms by having videos of mothers in school and how they cope with doing it all. However, today I came across this video and it touched me. Every once in a while through the chaos, sleepless nights, and merry-go-round of a life that all of us mothers live, we need to step back and take time to appreciate what we do have. I understand the strain and struggle of just trying to make ends meet and I too lie awake at night just hoping all the bills will be covered.

Thankfully I am now on track to becoming more financially independent and being able to provide a better life for my family, but sometimes I get so caught up in reaching my goals that I forget that my kids will not always be little and will not always need me.

Every once in a while take some time. Step back and look at what you do have and be grateful. This is not to say to lose focus on your goals or don't complete something that has to be done, but just find a few extra minutes a day to just sit, talk, play with your kids. It means more to them than you probably realize.

Single moms going to college have a difficult time finding the time, money, and stamina to attend college. Unlike the majority of college students whose only responsibility is going to class and getting good grades, parents in college also have to take care of their children at night. Feeding them, giving them their baths and putting them to bed. All before hitting the books. And if the kids get sick, forget about you just might not get any homework done.

So, how do moms attending college keep it all together? If they are lucky they have a good support group, whether it is other students in their same situation and/or their family. It is important to try to get yourself involved in a group of people who have a similar life to your own. There are a lot of advantages to surrounding yourself with other parents in school. For instance, if you babysitter falls through or if you child gets sick and you have to study, maybe another parent will watch your child. In turn you an return the favor someday when they need it, as it always seems like our children get sick at the worst times (not that there ever really is a good time).

Sometimes the day in and day out life of being a mother, single or married, can leave you physically and emotionally exhausted. So, you may be saying to yourself, "How in world can I go back to school? I don't have any energy as it is." For moms back in school, this can be a tough question to answer.

Numerous mothers have been able to dig down deep within themselves in order to succeed in school. It take discipline and organization. And, you have to get rid of the guilty feelings of not spending enough time with your child. After all, you are doing this for him/her and it will not last forever.

If you are fortunate enough to have a support system, whether it be family, friends, or maybe even other parents in your same situation who could help out, then take them up on their offers of help.
