General College Courses Online - A Straighter Line to a Degree

___________________________________________________________________________________

Today upon performing by Sunday ritual of browsing through the paper, this article got my attention about StraighterLine. I am always looking for any information on a way that busy moms (and dads) can go back to school for less and get a degree without the usual hassles of a typical college. And this article had some interesting information.

StraighterLine is an online educational service that offers those core courses that everyone must take when getting a degree like Algebra and Composition courses. Unlike a regular college, at Straighterline you can take as many courses as you want for $99 a month (they also have a $399 option too). This means that if you want to get all those courses out of the way, you can take them all for $99 a month.

Once you complete these courses and earn the credits, these credits can be transferred to an accredited partner college where you can continue your eduction with the credits earned at StraighterLine applying towards your final total.

Theoretically, once you transfer your courses to the partnered online college, you could transfer to another accredited college not partnered with StraighterLine and still have those credits count.

There are many things about this program that I like. Everyone knows that taking those prerequisite courses are a drag. It makes you feel like you are in high school and you really want them over with as soon as possible. Plus these courses are actually just money makers for the regular brick and mortar colleges.

I am hoping that this type of educational option will change the way some colleges charge for their degrees. Face it, having a degree is extremely important for anyone wanting to earn more money in life, but should it really cost as much as it does? I think there is a better way and that StraighterLine is on to something.
