Scholarships for Moms - Steps to Take to Get Money for School

___________________________________________________________________________________

Many moms who have been stay at home mothers, taking care of the family and the house, are now needing to return to work. This may be due to either their husband being out of work or unable to pay all the bills by himself or it could be due to divorce. But whatever the reason, more women are searching for scholarships for moms in order to be able to return to school.

And, if you do not want to attend a regular four-year college then you may also find financial aid for your two year degrees such as beauty school, medical transcription or coding, or maybe even a CNA license.

But there are some steps that you must take before searching for scholarships or moms and enrolling in any school:

  1. Learn more about the school(s) that you are thinking about attending. See if maybe you can sit in on a class and get a feel for the school to be sure it will be a good fit for you.

  2. Be sure that the school is accredited. Many schools carry the distinction of being accredited, therefore, are able to be granted government assistance. But those that are not accredited are unable to use Pell or FSEOG grants. Not only is it important when it comes to receiving money, but you want to be sure that your degree is recognized by employers too. You can find this information at the US Department of Education website.

  3. Get a copy of the catalog. Be sure that exactly what the school is advertising is exactly what they are delivering and that there are no hidden costs.

  4. Find out about their job placement assistance and whether or not the school aids students in finding jobs after they graduate.

Once you have rounded up a few potential schools that you would like to attend, your next step will be applying for all grants and scholarships for moms that you qualify to receive. It is very important to fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible after the first of the year and once you have completed your taxes, so as to receive the most money possible from the government in the form of the Pell and/or FSEOG grants. These are need based grants and combined can total a potential amount of $9350 towards your education.

When searching for scholarships for moms be sure to ask each school if they have any scholarships for non-traditional students or if you are a single parent, ask if they have any special programs for single parents. Most of the time this information will not be offered and you must ask if you want to receive it.

You will also want to do a search for any degree-specific scholarships that you may be able to receive. For instance, if you want to attend beauty school, you may want to apply for the Joe Francis Hair Care Scholarship.

It is very important to do your research on your own and not only to look to the financial aid office for help. Apply for all scholarships for moms and remember, applying for a scholarship is about free money, thus should never cost anything.

Single Mother Wins Medical School Scholarship

___________________________________________________________________________________

In Maine, a high-school drop out and mother of two has been awarded a $25,000 Doctors for Maine's Future scholarship for the study of medicine.

Tobin Carson, now age 32, has been working as a research technician at Lohmann Animal Health in Winslow. She is one of four people in Maine who qualified for the grant as a first-year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. This is a renewable scholarship, which means that she will be receiving $25,00 per year for the next four years.

This scholarship was established in July of this year to provide a tuition subsidy for eligible students who enter qualifying Maine-based medical school programs. The scholarships aim to address Maine's acute shortage of primary care physicians and the high cost of medical education.

In an address in May on national grants for biomedical research, the governor mentioned Tobin Carson by name.

"At age 15, she announced her dream of going to medical school," Baldacci said. "Unfortunately, she was discouraged from pursuing that dream, being told, 'People like you don't go to places like that.' Not long after that, Tobin quit high school, feeling that it wasn't doing her any good. But she never stopped learning and her desire to go to medical school never faded. After her children were born, she got her GED certificate and enrolled in the University of Maine at Farmington full time as a biology major, graduating at age 28.

Stories like this go to show everyone that anything is possible. Even if you dropped out of school at age 15 like this mother, you can still go back and change your life. But it is up to you and you must be committed to your decision.

Government Student Loans - Cutting Out the Middle Man

___________________________________________________________________________________

No matter how you feel towards the president, he is president and he with the vice president are putting together ways to try to make education more affordable for the middle class Americans.

One of the bills that is moving into the senate after being passed by the house is the bill concerning government student loans. This bill will in essence cut out the middle man in lending, i.e. the banks and private lenders. This is projected to free up an estimated $80 billion dollars over 10 years and half of that, or $40 billion, will be directed into the Pell Grant program.

This bill will originate all new federal student loans through the Direct Loan program starting in 2010, instead of through lenders subsidized by taxpayers in the federally-guaranteed student loan program. Unlike the lender-based program, the Direct Loan program is entirely insulated from market swings and can therefore guarantee students access to affordable college loans, at the same low interest rates, terms and conditions, no matter what happens in the economy.

If you would like to find out more on how this bill will help families and students just go here.

Plus this grant would also help streamline the FAFSA application process, which seems too cumbersome to some students.

Pell Grant - Bill to Boost Funding

___________________________________________________________________________________

Since the onset of him taking office, the president has put emphasis on education. He has raised the amount funded by the Pell grant, and there is currently a bill in the works to increase this grant even more.

The current maximum Pell Grant is $5,550, and in fiscal 2009 approximately $25 billion is slated for Pell Grants. And with this increase more students will qualify, especially the middle class families. This increase in education funding is contingent upon the Senate passing this bill, which would put an end to a federal program that subsidizes private lenders, who provide federally guaranteed student loans. The government would essentially be cutting out the middlemen and directly lending to students.

By doing this, an estimated $80 billion could be saved by the government over 10 years for education and half of that would go to Pell grants. The bill will help student aid programs finally serve the interests of students and alleviate difficulties in paying for college, said Melissa Salmanowitz, spokeswoman for the House Education and Labor Committee.

Unfortunately, though, the cost of college is rapidly increasing. But those who are seeking financial aid should do everything they can to find it, including checking out the accredited online schools to see what they have to offer.

In the end, it will be interesting to see if this gets passed or not, due to the fact that I am sure private loaning groups that are now making all this money by playing the middleman are sure to lean on the senate members to kill this bill.

Scholarship for Mom Helps UCSC Mom Keep Ph.D. on Track

___________________________________________________________________________________

I came across this article by J.M Brown jbrown@santacruzsentinel.com relating to a scholarship for mom at UCSC showing how this mom, Kristen Heady, was able to receive a science scholarship for just for re-entry women students, which allowed her to be able to pay for childcare while she was in school.

She received $1,200 from the Marilyn C. Davis Memorial Scholarship. This afforded her to be able to pay a baby sitter 10 hours per week for three months this summer to watch her baby and during those rare moments away, she was able to travel to the campus and interact with colleagues in her office.

"As a grad student, your monthly stipend is barely enough to live on in this county," said Kristen Heady. "You add child care to that and it's next to impossible."

To qualify, undergraduates have to be at least 25 and graduate students, 29. The women can use the money for everything from tuition fees and conference admission, to child care and other every day expenses that might put college out of reach for some students.

There is also an emergency fund connected to the scholarship for women who are suddenly forced to choose between "staying in school or feeding their kids," Anderson said.

This is another example of being sure to always search for scholarships that you may be able to receive that allow moms to return to school.

Grants for Homeless Americans - And Those at Risk

___________________________________________________________________________________
Announced yesterday, stimulus money for Florida has been given out in the form of grants for homeless Americans and those at risk of becoming homeless. This includes many single parent families, who are finding it harder and harder to be able to afford rent due to the slow economy and many people losing their jobs. In order to qualify for this grant, one has to make less than 50% of the area's median income.

The grants for homeless cannot be used for home mortgage payment, as there are is already government help for that. This is money directed towards those who need help with the rent, utilities, and deposits and for families who are behind on their rent or are homeless. The the current tally on homeless in Florida is quoted as being $58,000, but these numbers do not take in account those who have moved in with family members or friends.

This is money that can help those who need it get back on their feet in order to change their life around. Of course, if you do receive this money, make the most of it. Take a good hard look at where you are and where you would like to be and how you can get from point A to point B. If you do not put a plan in action, you will never be able to get out of the situation you are in and be able to live a better life.

And Florida is not the only state receiving grants for homeless stimulus money. If you are in dire straights and need help, contact your local government to see about what is available to you.

But in the end, it is up to you to decide if returning to school would allow you to have a better, more comfortable life. You have to be dedicated to your goal, as there will be times you may just want to give up. And remember that getting a degree online will only take a few years, which will pass anyway. But by getting a better education, you will be able to afford a more comfortable life for you and your children.

General College Courses Online - A Straighter Line to a Degree

___________________________________________________________________________________

Today upon performing by Sunday ritual of browsing through the paper, this article got my attention about StraighterLine. I am always looking for any information on a way that busy moms (and dads) can go back to school for less and get a degree without the usual hassles of a typical college. And this article had some interesting information.

StraighterLine is an online educational service that offers those core courses that everyone must take when getting a degree like Algebra and Composition courses. Unlike a regular college, at Straighterline you can take as many courses as you want for $99 a month (they also have a $399 option too). This means that if you want to get all those courses out of the way, you can take them all for $99 a month.

Once you complete these courses and earn the credits, these credits can be transferred to an accredited partner college where you can continue your eduction with the credits earned at StraighterLine applying towards your final total.

Theoretically, once you transfer your courses to the partnered online college, you could transfer to another accredited college not partnered with StraighterLine and still have those credits count.

There are many things about this program that I like. Everyone knows that taking those prerequisite courses are a drag. It makes you feel like you are in high school and you really want them over with as soon as possible. Plus these courses are actually just money makers for the regular brick and mortar colleges.

I am hoping that this type of educational option will change the way some colleges charge for their degrees. Face it, having a degree is extremely important for anyone wanting to earn more money in life, but should it really cost as much as it does? I think there is a better way and that StraighterLine is on to something.

Scholarships for School - Arkansas Starts Scholarship Lottery

___________________________________________________________________________________

Arkansas started selling lottery tickets and the real winner will be the scholarship funds in Arkansas, who will receive extra funding for scholarships for school. Currently there are four scratch-off tickets available with one selling for $1r, two cost $2, and another one costs $5.

The ceremonial first Arkansas Scholarship Lottery ticket was purchased by Dr. Jim Purcell, Director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, at 12:00:01 a.m. that morning a full 95 days earlier than the Jan. 1, 2010, launch anticipated when the Lottery legislation passed earlier this year. The early launch is expected to generate tens of millions extra in 2010 to fund college scholarships for school for Arkansas students. (according to Piggott Times Story)

"Arkansas ranks next to last among the states in the percentage of citizens who have a college degree. It is not coincidental we rank 49th in the nation in the median income level of our citizens. The proceeds from the lottery will help us fund scholarships so that more and more Arkansans can obtain a college degree. We are taking a good first step towards investing more money in education in Arkansas." said Dr. Purcell.

I am glad to see the lottery getting involved in funding scholarships for school. More lotteries should do this, as it is a way to generate money that might not otherwise be there and available to students who want to go to school.

So if you live in Arkansas and want to return to school, there should be more money for scholarships than before, which will help more students get their degrees with less debt.

Single Moms Going to College

___________________________________________________________________________________

I came across this video, which I thought would give some inspiration to other single moms going back to school. There is a mindset that you have to have in order to succeed. You have to believe 100% that you can do it and do not say things like "I hope I can make it"...instead say "I will make it." It can make all the difference.

As she says in the video, with a minimum wage living she will never be able to afford to do the things she wants to do, which is spending more time enjoying life with her kids. Building memories with her kids. She does not want her children to look back and say how hard mom always worked but they never had anything. I applaud her in her efforts and hope she is able to keep up with her video documentary to give other women some insight and inspiration.

Single moms are going back to college both like her at a brick and mortar college and even online. You have to decide which would be better for you according to your learning styles. Some people just do better on their own and others need to physically be in the school to do well. Either way, just do something to change your life, if you are unhappy with your present financial situation.
